Image Quality and the pursuit of excellence

I was introduced to the Iris/Giclee print process in the fall of 1997. Prior to that, I had never seen a photograph printed on watercolor paper, apart from a few lithographs of Andre Martin's work at the Gallerie Delpire in Paris in 1975.

The look of the image on a watercolor substrate such as Somerset Velvet was the effect I had been searching for throughout my 36 years as a photographer. It was painterly as opposed to plastic. The image appeared to have a depth and a dimensionality that was lost on glossy paper. Most observers would comment, "these images do not look like photographs." It is, to me, simply the most exciting, most beautiful improvement to color printing since the first autochromes.

The Giclee process offers the option of printing on many different substrates, including Arches and Somerset Velvet watercolor papers. This "tactile" appearance does not come across on a computer monitor for obvious reasons. Color monitors also tend to render areas of continuous tone, such as: blue skies, dune faces, and shadow areas, as block patterns, in contrast to the uniform, continuous tones as they appear in the original photograph. This is entirely "artifact" which is a function of a 72 DPI image on a color monitor. Rest assured, it is not present in any print. -- Lawrence Beck
